US firm studies energy production from LWMC waste

A THREE-member delegation of the US firm Ecoair visited the Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) to study solid waste management and various possibilities of energy production from the waste in Lahore.

Chief Executive Officer Ecoair Mr. Peter Kudsen headed the delegation and was accompanied by WtE experts Mr. Paul Franz Neubacher and Mr. Qayyum Manzar. GM procurement and contracts Col. Tahir Maqbool, senior manager operations Mr. Wasif Azhar and assistant manager Sajid Riaz hosted the delegation.

The delegation was briefed about the current initiatives of LWMC in the Waste to Energy project and future plans. They also paid visit to LWMC’s old dumpsite at Mehmood Booti, new and under-construction sanitary landfill site at Lakhodair, Lahore Compost Plant and DG Cement’s compost plant.

While visiting various installations, the US delegation appreciated the standard and quality of work being done by LWMC and Turkish engineers and termed the sanitary landfill site matched with the one of European standards. The US expert and chemical engineer Paul said that waste dumping without treatment is highly discouraged in developed countries and recycling and reuse of the waste items is a must there.

General Manager Procurement and Contracts Col. Tahir Maqbool was accompanying the delegation on the occasion and termed this visit of the US delegates of great significance. He briefed the US experts of LWMC’s agreements with international firms in order to produce electricity from waste in near future.

Later, the delegates called on MD Lahore Waste Management Company in his office and discussed the possibilities of joint ventures in waste to energy projects.
