Shahbaz approves formation of Punjab Energy Council

Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has approved the formation of Punjab Energy Council for the speedy implementation of projects in energy sector.

The Council will undertake comprehensive planning for investment in energy sector in the province, formulate recommendations for the generation of energy from different sources, maintain a close contact with federal ministries and institutions for the expeditious implementation of the projects as well as provide one-window facility to investors in Punjab.

The chief minister will be the chairman of the energy council. Shahbaz Sharif besides giving approval to the names of the members of the energy council also constituted four sub-committees. Provincial Minister for Agriculture will be the head of bagasse and biomass sub-committee, Special Assistant Arshad Jatt of biogas sub-committee, Provincial Energy Minister of solar and coal-based sub-committee while finance committee will be headed by Dr Ayesha Pasha. The Energy Council will meet twice a week and will work expeditiously for meeting energy requirements of the province.

Chief Minister presided over a high-level meeting in this regard here Wednesday which was attended by Provincial Minister Sher Ali Khan, Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman, Muhammad Shafique, Chief Secretary, Chairman Planning & Development, secretaries concerned and senior officials.

Addressing the first meeting of energy council, the chief minister said that a roadmap has been devised for energy sector after lengthy and continuous meetings during the last two months which will be implemented by energy council expeditiously and without wasting time. He said that members of the energy council should work with a missionary zeal so as to rid the people of energy crisis as soon as possible.

He directed that Secretary Agriculture should evolve a policy framework with the consultation of Sugar Mills Association for generation of electricity from bagasse while a policy framework should also be formulated for producing energy from solar, biogas, biomass and coal. The CM said that Punjab government will extend all-out encouragement to the investors willing to invest in energy sector in the province. He said that members of energy council should work with effective coordination so that positive results could be achieved.

He said that 10,000 acres land has been allocated for setting up Quaid-e-Azam Solar Park in Cholistan which will soon be inaugurated. He directed that financial model should be prepared for setting up a 200-megawatt coal power plant in Punjab. He expressed the hope that energy council will take solid measures expeditiously for project of generation of power.
