Punjab to set up secretariat for investment in energy projects

Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has decided to set up a small energy secretariat for ensuring investment in energy projects, provision of facilities to the investors and rapid implementation on the projects.

According to a handout issued on Saturday, this was decided at a high-level meeting of Punjab Energy Committee held under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif.

Speaking on the occasion, the CM said that energy secretariat will work in Civil Secretariat and Chief Minister’s office at a time for effective mutual liaison. He said that it has been decided to immediately constitute Provincial Energy Commission in Punjab which will form rules and regulations and policy framework about the energy projects. The chief minister said that with the establishment of small secretariat and constitution of Provincial Energy Commission, the matters relating to energy sector would be disposed of smoothly and one window facility will be provided to the investors for all energy projects.

Shahbaz Sharif said that Punjab government in the light of long consultation, experts’ opinions and the talks with stakeholders, has prepared a roadmap for energy sector, which would be implemented without any delay so that energy crisis could be overcome at the earliest and the industrial and trade activities completely restored. The CM expressed the hope that the energy projects would soon be given a practical shape. Shahbaz Sharif while terming the successful holding of energy investment conference with regard to the future of energy sector as a good omen said that investors have been motivated through this conference to launch projects in energy sector. He said that Punjab government is going to lay the foundation stone of Quaid-e-Azam Solar Park on 7,500 acres land in Cholistan within a couple of days for the facility of local and foreign investors whereas the team of Chinese engineers is arriving Pakistan soon for starting work on Nandipur Power Project.

Shahbaz Sharif directed that the design of infrastructure development in Quaid-e-Azam Solar Park should be prepared immediately. He further directed that energy committee should also prepare financial model with comprehensive recommendations regarding all phases from launching of the project to its completion. He also directed to constitute technical sub-committee, solar, coal and hydle sub-committee, biomass, biogass and bagasse sub-committee and finance sub-committee for Provincial Energy Commission. He said that there is no room for failure in energy generating projects; therefore, it is high time to take serious practical steps in energy sector.

Shahbaz Sharif pledged that all energy projects in Punjab would be completed transparently and speedily and government would adopt a vibrant policy. The CM while reviewing the progress on hydle power projects said that those companies which did not take any practical step in this regard should be ascertained and strict action should be taken against the persons involved in unjustified delay. He directed that the process of launching five to ten megawatts biomass projects should be accelerated and the government will have to make progress first towards this direction. The chief minister was given a detailed briefing regarding roadmap of energy sector.
