PCRET to install 2,500 biogas plants by June 30

Pakistan Council of Renewable Energy Technologies (PCRET) under the project, ‘Biogas Technology and Production of Bio-Fertilizer’ will complete installation of 2,500 biogas plants throughout the country by end of this month.

PCRET has already installed more than 2,290 biogas plants to meet domestic fuel needs of rural areas and production of bio-fertilizer.

The project was initiated in 2008 and around 1,700 plants were installed in Punjab, 300 in Sindh, 113 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 20 in federal capital, 71 in Balochistan and 50 in AJK.

According to official data, total cost of this project is Rs 97.648 million, which will be completed by June 30, 2013.

An official of PCRET said, “We can meet about 30 percent cooking requirements of the rural masses from this source of energy (biogas) alone.

Besides, producing 33.52 million kilogrammes of bio-fertilizer per day or 18.6 million tonnes of bio-fertilizer per year, is an essential requirement for sustaining the fertility of agricultural lands.”

The official said a family-sized biogas plant (5 M3) saves annually 1,0056 kgs wood or 22,200 kgs animal dung or 2,940 kgs charcoal or 1,104 litres kerosene oil or 540 kgs LPG or 9,000 Kwh electricity.

“Completion of this project will help protect forests, environment and bio-diversity, provision of neat and clean atmosphere, protect eye-cataracts and respiratory diseases and also provision of bio-fertilizer, which is direly needed for the improvement and sustenance of fertility of agri lands.”
