No confusion on Pak-Iran gas pipeline project: FO

Foreign office said on Thursday that there existed no confusion on the Pakistan and Iran Gas Pipeline project as President Asif Ali Zardari would visit Iran to perform ground breaking of the project on Monday.

Foreign Office spokesman Moazzam Ahmad Khan at the weekly news briefing said, “Pakistan is aware of concerns of the United States and some other countries about the project but hoped that they would understand Pakistan’s economic compulsions in this regard.

He said that several heads of state had also been invited to attend the ceremony. He said that the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Resources was working out details in this regard. He rejected the impression that Pakistan was in a fix over the project due to foreign pressure and said the project was in the national interests and Pakistan was committed to going ahead with it.To a question he said that the discussions were also going on with Iran about setting up of an oil refinery at Gwadar.
