Energy dept demands Rs18b

THE Punjab Energy Department has demanded Rs18 billion for the development projects in the energy sector during the next fiscal 2013-2014 while the Planning & Development Board has recommended only Rs6 billion for the development projects, The News has learnt.

As per the budget proposals, sent by the Energy Department to the Planning & Development Board, the department demanded Rs1.5 billion for the conversion of government schools from electricity to solar system, Rs932 million for Advance Metering Infrastructure on electricity connections of government institutions, and Rs1.6 billion for the establishment of Coal Power Plants for the industrial estates of Multan and Lahore, while Rs90 million has been demanded for the feasibility study of Coal Power Plant for Faisalabad and Lahore Industrial Estates.

For the ongoing schemes which had been initiated with the cooperation of the Asian Development Bank for the construction of 25MW five Hydle Power Plants at canals, Rs3.3 billion has been demanded, Rs7.2 billion for 120MW Hydle Power Plant at Taunsa Barrage, Rs144.5 million for the construction of Energy Research & Development Center at University of Engineering Technology (UET) Lahore, and Rs6.7 million of Chief Minister Punjab Ujalla Scheme.

Similarly, the department has demanded Rs120 million for the feasibility study of 40 community-based Micro Hydle Power Plants, Rs100 million for the feasibility study of 300MW Coal Power Plant at Muzzafarghar, and Rs20.05 million for 3.2MW Khokhara Power Plant in the first phase while the total estimated cost of this project is Rs1.2 billion.

Moreover, Rs320 million has been demanded for the installation of 100 Solar Water Pumps in the Agriculture Sector, Rs460 million for the construction of 2.3MW Solar Power Plant at Bahawalpur, Rs100 million for the installation of Solar Geysers at government institutions, Rs271.2 million for the installation of 300 Biogas Plants at Agriculture Farms, Rs200 million for the construction of Biogas Research Institute Faisalabad, Rs98 million for the establishment of Energy Conservation Cell, Rs38 million for the construction of Energy Department Complex Lahore, and Rs900.07 million for power generation from Biogas at the government livestock farms at Bhakkar, Rajanpur, Khushab, Khanewal, Bahawalnagar and Bahawalpur.

For the conversion of 50 government offices from electricity to solar system, Rs47 million has been demanded, Rs1.7 billion for the construction of 50MW Combined Solar Project at Muzaffarghar, and four million rupees for feasibility study for solar projects at Bahawalpur and Bahawalnagar.

However, sources in the P&D have disclosed that the board has recommended only Rs6 billion for the development projects of the Energy Department.
