City streets to have LED lights

Karachi the city of distances is on its way to have LED lights on its streets at a cost cuitting and efficiency imjprovement stratgegy.

GE Lighting (NYSE: GE) Has underlined the important role that LED lighting solutions play in strengthening energy sector efficiencies at a special seminar organized by the company in association with the Commissioner Karachi, titled ‘Karachi City of LED Lights.’

Attending the seminar, Jam Khan Shoro, Provincial Minister of the Sindh Government, urged GE to further extend its partnership to support the Government’s strategies to address the country’s power shortage.

He said that several initiatives are being taken to promote energy use efficiency and conservation, with particular emphasis on green energy initiatives. “GE’s seminar offers a strong platform for energy sector stakeholders and the public to further explore the possibility offered by LED lighting to address the energy challenges.”

Sarim Sheikh, GE Pakistan’s CEO and President, said: “GE is committed to supporting Pakistan in its development vision, particularly in driving energy sector efficiencies.

Over the years, we have established strong partnerships in bringing innovative solutions that help meet the growing demand for power in the country. With the seminar we are underlining the importance of using LED lighting solutions that can contribute not only to saving energy but also conserving our environment. Robert Baranyi, Systems Manager of GE Lighting, explained that lighting accounts for nearly 20 per cent of all power usage around the world. “Upto 75 per cent of the energy usage can be saved by switching to energy-efficient LED lighting systems, a technology that was pioneered by GE. Our LED solutions save energy and are also lead and mercury free, which plays a key role in driving environmental sustainability.

GE Lighting’s newest product ranges have the potential to contribute to up to 50 per cent in energy cost savings.”

LEDs also include a long useful life of up to 50,000 hours, minimized maintenance and related costs and excellent low temperature performance. In roadway lighting, LEDs deliver the added advantage of better visual conditions with the color characteristics of LEDs creating better object recognition and visual results.

This is also beneficial for other applications such as for parking lots, where the footage is clearer for security cameras, thus promoting safety.
