ADB, Punjab govt to cooperate in energy

Punjab government and the Asian Development Bank have agreed to enhance cooperation in the energy sector wherein the bank would set up solar energy projects under public-private partnership in the province.

The first project would be completed within a year whereas the ADB would complete projects of 2,000 megawatts within two years.

According to a handout, this was agreed during a meeting between Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and an Asian Development Bank delegation on Saturday.

Talking to the delegation, Shahbaz welcomed setting up of the solar energy projects in Punjab. He said work on these projects should be started expeditiously and completed at the earliest so that people could be relieved of the electricity crisis. He said the PML-N government had promised people to reduce energy crisis and it would have to fulfil this promise at all costs.

Asian Development Bank Senior Adviser Chin Chooon Fong said besides solar energy, the bank would also extend cooperation in coal, biomass, biogas and hydro energy projects and try its best to complete the first project as soon as possible.
