Wapda struggling hard to complete projects on time

Appalled by inordinate delays in the construction of almost all water sector projects, the Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) on Wednesday reiterated its resolve to speed up the work in a meeting with the Contractors Association of Pakistan (CAP), according to a statement.

Wapda and contractors are committed to complete the water and hydropower projects on time, so that the country could accrue their benefits for the economic stability, social development and poverty reduction, it said.

This commitment was shown in a meeting between Wapda and CAP at the Wapda House.

The CAP delegation was led by its chairman Engineer Akbar Sheikh, it said.

Sheikh said that completion of the projects within stipulated timeframe and in accordance with the specified quality standards is collective responsibility of all stakeholders, including the contractors.

Everyone must fulfill this responsibility, he said.

The Wapda chairman asked CAP to play an active role by strengthening their members for the purpose.

The chairman said that Wapda has expedited efforts for the completion of the projects, which were delayed due to financial constraints, adding that Wapda has decided to complete all such projects in phases by making prudent use of the available funds.

Responding to the suggestions made by CAP, the Wapda chairman said that the authority would support the construction industry to help grow as per the rules in a competitive manner.

CAP assured Wapda of its assistance in timely completion of the projects. The matters relating to standard bidding documents of the Pakistan Engineering Council, performance guarantee, insurance, mobilisation advance, price adjustment, etc, also came under discussion during in the meeting, according to the statement.
