President chairs meeting on energy

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf on Sunday night chaired a meeting at the Awian-e-Sadr to review the latest energy situation in the country.

Those who were present during the meeting included Ch Ahmed Mukhtar, Minister for Water & Power, Finance Minister Dr Hafeez Sheikh, Secretary General M. Salman Faruqui, Adviser to PM on Petroleum and Natural Resources Dr Asim Hussain, Secretary to the President Malik Asif Hayat and other concerned senior officials. Aseefa Bhutto Zardari was also present during the meeting.

Ch Ahmed Mukhtar briefed the meeting about the latest power situation in the country. He said that the all the high voltage power pylons in Muzzaffargarh had been re-erected and the power disrupted due to their damage added to the national grid. The minister informed the meeting that the power situation was steadily improving and expressed the hope that with the rising water levels in reservoirs, the situation will further improve with regard to power generation. Dr Asim Hussain informed the meeting about the availability of gas and fuel for the power generation.

The president directed that he should regularly update him about the power situation, adding that there should be no slackness in this regard as the power issue had become the foremost and most critical issue.
