Power generation: Malaysia keen to invest in hydel, coal projects

ISLAMABAD: Malaysians are keen to invest in hydel and coal power generation and infrastructure development projects in Pakistan.  This was stated by visiting Malaysian delegation headed by Datuk Seri Samy Vellu, Special Envoy to the Malaysian Prime Minister on Infrastructure during a meeting with Federal Minister for Water and Power Naveed Qamar here on Wednesday. Vellu said that Malaysia has tripled its capacity in the infrastructure development sector and has also expertise in the power generation projects. The Malaysian investors are already working in Pakistan in various hydel and thermal projects and keen to increase their volume of investment. The Malaysians are interested to work together with Pakistani people. They are also interested even in other projects like infrastructure development and construction projects. The investors working here in Pakistan are very satisfied and enjoying good relations with Pakistani community, he observed. He asked the minister will provide details of the projects being offered to the private investors for investment. Vellu also invited the minister to visit Malaysia to see their expertise in the power generation projects. The minister while welcoming the delegation briefed about the current energy requirements of the country and offered to invest in the coal, hydel and wind power generation projects. He said that power sector in Pakistan has great potential and the investors are getting reasonable return on their investment. The incentive-based power policy and sovereign guarantees are being offered to investors who are investing in the power sector. He said that Malaysian investors are working on 840 megawatts (MW) Suki Kinari, new bong hydel and thermal projects and a number of other hydel and hydro power generation projects. The government is seeking investment for Diamer Bhasha, Kurram Tangi, Munda and 12 small and medium dams projects located in various parts of the country. We will wellcome the investment in coal, hydel and wind power generation projects, which are future baseline projects for the country. The minister also offered investment in the coal mining projects. The minister stated that the ministry will provide details of the projects for investment and asked to give the specific projects in this regard. He also appointed additional secretary as a focal person in this regard.
