People of Sindh biggest beneficiaries of Kalabagh Dam

Abdul Basit, former senior vice president and former chairman of Pakistan Poultry Association (PPA), has said that the biggest beneficiaries of Kalabagh Dam will be the people of Sindh, Southern Punjab and DI Khan and it is their duty to take the anti- dam people to task, according to a statement on Saturday.

The Lahore High Court orders have saved the country and its people from poverty and hunger, he said.

“Only a joint parliamentary session has the powers to undo Council of Common Interest decisions; therefore, the government is left with no other option but to implement CCI decision as per the LHC orders,” he said.

Basit said that scarcity of water and power has adversely affected the quality and security of life of the people and it is in violation of their fundamental rights enshrined in the constitution. Hence there is an urgent need to take a decision to remedy the situation, he said.

He urged the government to immediately start work on mega project of Kalabagh Dam if it wants to save the future generations. He alleged that the enemies of Pakistan are spending all their energies to push Pakistan on the brink of starvation but the nation will have to show solidarity to foil their nefarious designs.

The water shortage is not only impacting the agricultural products but also aggravating the energy situation as there is a time when electricity generated in Pakistan had a bigger share in the energy mix and today the situation is other way around, he said, adding that more than half of the electricity is being generated through hydropower that is an unjustified proportion by all means for a country like Pakistan.
