MASDAR awards CDM validation of three projects to TÜV Rheinland

The three projects encompass a wind farm, a photovoltaic (PV) power plant and a flare gas reduction project.

The Sir Bani Yas wind farm, with a total electricity generation capacity of 28.8 MW, is expected to deliver 53,000 MWh of renewable energy per year to Abu Dhabi’s electricity grid. CO2 emissions will thereby be reduced by 43,407 tons annually for ten years. The 100 MW PV power plant, named “Al Nour 1 project”, is expected to have an output of 176,853 MWh per year and will save 144,834 tons of CO2 every year for ten years. The third project is called “Flare gas reduction through spiking compressor at Shah” and has been developed by Abu Dhabi Company for Onshore Oil Operations (ADCO). The aim of the project is to reduce greenhouse gases (GHG) by recovering, compressing and exporting the associated gas to gas processing stations. This will result in the annual reduction of GHG emissions by 98,362 tons for ten years.

TÜV Rheinland Middle East will execute the validation of the CDM projects in cooperation with TÜV Rheinland (India) Pvt Ltd. All work for the CDM will be conducted according to the steps defined in the Kyoto protocol, Article 12.

As a basis for validation, TÜV Rheinland will check the monitoring plan and the emission reductions that have been calculated for the projects. TÜV Rheinland will also initiate publication of the drafted project design document (PDD) on the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) website in order to give the public the opportunity to submit their input on the project. Other works for validation include on-site visits, background investigations and draft validation reporting for the different projects. TÜV Rheinland will also provide final validation reporting and a technical review for each project. In the case of a positive outcome for the validation process, the projects will be submitted to the UNFCCC for registration.

These CDM projects will support the sustainable development and emission reduction of the United Arab Emirates and will allow the country to earn 286,603 certified emission reduction (CER) credits each year for trading and selling.
