KESC proposes tariff increase of Rs1.64 per unit for April, May

The Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) has proposed to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) an increase in its tariff by Rs1.12 and 51 paisas per unit for the months of April and May, respectively under the monthly fuel price adjustment (FPA), an official said on Friday.

Nepra would hold a public hearing to consider the proposed increase on July 18, he said. The increase in tariff, if approved, would be adjusted in the bills of subsequent months, he said.

Pursuant to the provisions of Section 31 (4) of the Regulation of Generation, Transmission and Distribution of Electric Power Act 1997 and as per the mechanism for monthly fuel price adjustment, Nepra reviews and revises the approved tariff on account of any variation in the fuel charges on a monthly basis.

As per the mechanism prescribed by the authority, KESC is allowed monthly adjustment in fuel cost component for its own generation, as well as power purchase cost from the external sources on account of fuel price variation without taking into account the effect of transmission and distribution losses, the official said.

KESC has submitted its requests of monthly adjustments due to fuel price variation for April and May.

The cost of fuel and power purchase claimed by the company does not include any amount of late payment of surcharge, markup or interest.
