Germany keen to invest in solar sector

The investors of Germany are taking keen interest to invest in solar energy sector of Pakistan since they have technology, expertise, and equipments to generate electricity from the solar technology.

This was stated by Raphael Lechner, lead trainer of Institut für Energietechnik, on the occasion of launching 5-day training workshop, organised by Renewable and Alternative Energy Association of Pakistan (REAP), here on Monday.

Alternate Energy Development Board (AEDB), government of Pakistan, GIZ, Institution of Engineers, Pakistan (IEP), and Energy Update supported the workshop. He said the solar energy is one of the cost-effective technologies for Pakistan to overcome its worsening energy crisis. The country has immense solar energy potential, he added.

Lechner said huge investments would land in this sector if the government and private sector join hands to work on this fastest emerging technology and a source of electricity production. Germany has achieved tremendous success in renewable energy production and attained a status of one the world’s top solar energy power producers. He was of the view that ecosystem should be developed for the promotion and development of solar-powered energy sector.

There is need to equip human resource in the country with advanced skills of this technology, he emphasised. Dr Nasim Ahmed Khan, former secretary Alternate Energy Development Board, said the government should support renewable energy sector honestly through proper funding to research and development and human resource training.

There are numerous small solar projects in the queue to be established in the next few years but the developments should be expedited to meet the growing needs of electricity in the country, he added.

Chairman REAP, Mohammad Abbas Sajid, said training of engineers, technicians, and scientists is important to promote solar energy sector. In this regard, REAP is working seriously to organise training workshops along with the stakeholders in various cities, he added. He said the association should include more stakeholders for the cause of energy self-sufficiency. The workshop will continue till November 23, 2012.
